My story
Meet Evan Kueffner
The story behind As Within: how a spine injury turned a college wrestler into an Asheville trainer devoted to strength, recovery, and the nervous system.
Book your free consultI fell in love with fitness at a young age, spending the summer after my 11th birthday passing a pair of blue-neoprene-wrapped 10lb dumbbells back and forth with my brother. Older cousins pressured me into football and wrestling in 7th grade, and after a steep learning curve, I couldn't imagine life without athletics. In high school I was blessed with coaches who ran a highly structured, intense weightlifting program, and it was there that exercise first became a spiritual practice for me.
College brought both a B.A. in Psychology and college wrestling. Then, in my sophomore year, degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis, multiple slipped lumbar vertebrae, ended a promising athletic career.
The injury that became the education
Serendipitously, that was when I was introduced to Buddhism and the practice of breath meditation. Forced by my injuries to adapt, I began a deep exploration of breathwork, self-myofascial release, meditation, and functional movement patterns, searching for a way to restore my body to balance while still training with the intensity I craved.
After several years of that obsession, and training many friends along the way, I realized my healing journey had quietly become a professional one. I earned my Personal Training certification from the American Council on Exercise (ACE) in 2020, then began a detailed study of advanced mobility techniques with the Coaching the Body Institute in Evanston, Illinois, earning my Practitioner certification in 2022.
From Detroit to Asheville
In the summer of 2024 I moved from Detroit to Asheville, drawn by the incredible nature and landscapes of Western North Carolina. In February of 2026, As Within was born out of a desire to bring clients the purest expression of what I have learned.
I have benefitted immensely from travel through the Buddhist cultures of Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam, and I hold deep gratitude for my meditation retreat experiences and daily practice. When I am not in a workout, you can usually find me playing didgeridoo or flute, slow-cooking something from the UNCA farmers market in my dutch oven, enjoying a local music venue, or trekking up a nearby hill.
The studio is not only where I guide clients through their sessions. It is also my home. I quite literally live this work.
What I believe
What you cultivate internally shapes your life externally. As Within is built on that idea, and on the conviction that real health has two halves: the capacity to exert yourself, and the ability to truly rest. Most people train only one side. My work is to help you build both, with rigor and with care, so you can push past what you thought you were capable of while taking genuine care of your body.
