Book your free consultIf you are looking for a personal trainer for back pain in Asheville, I understand what you are carrying, because I have carried it too. My name is Evan Kueffner, and I run As Within Holistic Fitness, a private one-on-one studio in downtown Asheville. I specialize in training people who live with back pain, stiffness, and old injuries. My goal is simple: to help you move better and feel stronger, at a pace that respects your body. Before we begin, please talk with your doctor. I am a personal trainer, not a physical therapist or physician, and I often work alongside the medical providers you already trust.
My Own Story
I was a college wrestler. I trained hard, and I loved it. Then degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis, a condition where a bone in the lower spine slips out of place, ended my athletic career. For a while I did not know what my body could still do.
So I rebuilt it. I learned to breathe well, to release tight tissue, and to strengthen slowly and carefully. I studied mobility, which is the ability to move a joint through its full range with control. Piece by piece, I found my way back to a strong and steady body. That experience is exactly why I train the way I do. I know how it feels to start over, and I know that careful work adds up.
How Careful Training Can Help
Exercise is one of the most trusted ways to support a healthy, capable body over time. When strength and mobility work is thoughtful and built for you, it can help you move with more ease and feel more confident in daily life.
I want to be clear and honest here. Training does not treat, cure, or reverse any medical condition, and I never diagnose anything. What good training can do is teach you how to move, build strength around the areas that support your spine, and help you feel more at home in your body. Your doctor guides your care. My job is education and exercise that fits within that care.
Assessment First, Always
I never hand anyone a generic plan. We start by understanding your body as it is today.
- Phone consult. We talk about your history, your goals, and any guidance from your doctor. This call is free.
- In-person movement and mobility assessment. In the studio, I watch how you move, where you feel restricted, and where you feel strong. This is calm and unhurried.
- A custom plan. From what I learn, I build a program made only for you, and we adjust it as you progress.
This assessment-first approach matters most when you are training with a spine injury or long-standing pain. Small details in how you move can make a large difference, and I want to see them clearly before we load anything.
Mobility Training in Asheville
A lot of stiffness comes from tissue and joints that have simply stopped moving through their full range. Gentle, consistent mobility training in Asheville can help restore some of that motion so everyday tasks feel less guarded.
As a Coaching the Body Institute Certified Practitioner, I use neuromuscular techniques that focus on the relationship between muscles, movement, and comfort. As an ACE Functional Training Specialist, I build strength in the patterns you actually use: standing up, bending, reaching, carrying, and walking. We combine both so that better movement and real strength grow together.
Movement for Lower Back Pain
When people search for movement for lower back pain, they are often looking for something safe to do that will not make things worse. That is a wise instinct. In our sessions, we begin well within your comfort zone and progress only when your body is ready.
Breathwork is part of this too. Learning to breathe fully can help you relax tight areas and stay steady during effort. I also draw on self-myofascial release, a simple way of easing tension in the soft tissue around a muscle. None of this replaces medical care. All of it can sit gently alongside it.
A Calm, Private Place to Train
My studio is quiet, private, and one-on-one. It is also my home, so it feels human rather than clinical. There are no crowds and no rushing. For many people living with pain, that calm is exactly what makes steady progress possible.
If you have been waiting to start because you were worried about doing the wrong thing, I would be glad to talk with you. Book your free consult and we will take it one careful step at a time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a personal trainer help with back pain?
A trainer can teach you how to move well and build strength and mobility that support daily life. A trainer does not treat or diagnose medical conditions. Please check with your doctor first, and I am happy to work alongside your medical providers.
Do you train people with a diagnosed spine injury?
Yes, I have experience training with a spine injury, including my own history of degenerative disc disease and spondylolisthesis. We always begin with an assessment and follow any guidance your doctor has given you.
What happens in the first session?
We start with a free phone consult, then an in-person movement and mobility assessment in my downtown Asheville studio. From there I build a plan made only for you.
How are sessions priced?
Private Fitness Coaching is offered in packages of eight fifty-minute one-on-one sessions for $800. I am glad to walk you through the options on your free consult.
