What a Deep Rest Recovery Session Is, and Who It Is For
Deep Rest Recovery sessions blend guided breathwork, somatic meditation, and didgeridoo to help your nervous system truly settle.
Most of us are good at pushing. We work hard, train hard, and keep going long after our bodies ask us to stop. What far fewer of us ever learn is how to truly let go. That is what Deep Rest Recovery is for. It is a quiet, guided session designed to help your body shift out of stress and into genuine rest, using slow breathwork, gentle attention, and the deep hum of the didgeridoo.
I am Evan Kueffner, the trainer and owner of As Within, a private one-on-one studio in downtown Asheville. A back injury ended my athletic career and sent me deep into breathwork and meditation as I rebuilt my own body. These practices are now at the heart of what I offer.
Health needs both effort and rest
Real health has two halves. One is effort: the work of training, moving, and building strength. The other is rest: the repair your body does when it feels safe and calm. Both matter, and one without the other tends to leave you stuck.
Here is the catch. Most people know how to work hard. Almost no one is taught how to rest on purpose. The body has a nervous system with two sides. One side handles alertness, effort, and stress. The other handles rest, digestion, and repair. Modern life keeps many of us running warm on the effort side all day, and often into the night.
To down-regulate simply means to help that busy side settle so the restful side can come forward. Most people have never learned how to do this. Deep Rest Recovery is a way to practice it, with guidance, in a room built for calm.
What a session involves
A Deep Rest Recovery session is gentle from start to finish. You arrive, take off your shoes, and lie down. The lights are low and there is nowhere you need to be. I guide you through three simple layers:
- Guided breathwork. Slow, easy breathing patterns, nothing forced or extreme. The way you breathe sends signals to your body about whether you are safe or under pressure. Gentle breathing tends to invite calm, and I lead you through it step by step.
- Somatic meditation. This means bringing your attention to physical sensations in the body, like the weight of your limbs or the rise of your breath, rather than getting lost in thought. It helps you land in the present moment.
- The didgeridoo. This is a wind instrument with a deep, steady tone you can feel as much as hear. Its resonance provides a tactile anchor, entraining the nervous system into a cohesive state.
You do not have to be good at any of this. Everything is guided. Your only job is to lie there and receive.
What it feels like
Most people describe the experience as floating, or as the kind of rest they did not know they needed. Some drift close to sleep. Some feel weeks of held tension quietly release from the shoulders, jaw, or lower back. There is nothing to achieve and nothing to get right. Many leave feeling lighter, clearer, and calmer than when they walked in, and that calm often lingers into the rest of the week.
Who benefits from Deep Rest Recovery
These sessions are for anyone carrying more tension than they would like. That often includes:
- Stressed professionals who feel wound tight and cannot switch off at the end of the day.
- Hard-training athletes who want to support how their body repairs between demanding sessions.
- Poor sleepers who lie awake with a busy mind and want a calmer baseline.
- Anyone with chronic tension, tight shoulders, or a racing head who simply wants to feel more at ease.
You do not need to be flexible, fit, or experienced with meditation. You only need to be willing to slow down.
A gentle note: this is education and exercise, not medical care. I am a trainer, not a doctor. If you have a health condition or any concern, please talk with your doctor first.
You can think of Deep Rest Recovery as the recovery half of a complete practice. If you would like to read more about the breath side of this work, my page on breathwork in Asheville goes deeper.
